What to do on December 24-25?

As many of our friends are preparing to celebrate Christmas tonight and tomorrow, Jews are often asking themselves what can they do when the city seems to shut down. In an article I just read, it said that the three most popular things Jews do include: eating Chinese food (Cindi and Marlon have that angle handled), going to a movie, and volunteering their services at institutions that need extra hands because they are short-staffed. I know Brenda Ingraham volunteers at the Blumkin Home on Christmas Day. For many families with extended families that do celebrate Christmas, the day also provides an opportunity to spend time with loved ones.

Of course tomorrow could also be a day to prepare for Shabbat. It's always a treat to actually have time to put together a special meal before sunset, clean the house, etc. Tomorrow could also be a day to check on other congregants who have been homebound due to weather, age, or health. The weather is supposed to be nasty...but phone calls and e-mail notes seem a safe way of connecting.

Take care.
Nancy
