Benediction to be Given at City-Wide Observance of Memorial Day

Source of All Being

As we prepare to leave this memorial service we are thankful for having had the opportunity to reflect upon the many blessings of being part of this great nation.

Many of us are family members, friends, and neighbors of those who died while serving this nation.  We feel great pride knowing what kinds of risks our loved ones took in order to ensure our own liberty and freedom from tyranny.  We are humbled by the courage they displayed in the face of danger.  We recognize that they lived in times of great challenge and responded magnificently.

Memory can be used to make us bitter or better.  May our memories today help us focus on the qualities of our departed that enriched our lives. Although we acknowledge the pain and anguish of the past, please allow us also to leave here today with memories of the good and the sweet as well.

Our prayer is that the souls of those who have perished serving this great nation will be bound up in the bond of life; that You will gather our fallen into your eternal shelter where there is no hatred and no war, just peace.   May their lives serve as an inspiration for us now and in the future because we know the value of trying to create a world where peace will not only be a dream but a reality for all humankind. May we match their bravery with the moral courage to eliminate hatred and suffering, to see conflict and try to stop it.

Amen
