Hebrew lessons

With our emphasis on siddur Hebrew in our joint religious school most of our kids come away with no ability to communicate their thoughts in modern Hebrew. We have not taught conversational Hebrew since the late 1970s when Ophira Bahar,Rabbi Bisman,and I taught a program called Byad HaLashon. Hence I am finding it quite exciting to see what 2 hours a day for 10 days can do to add to the language acquisition skills of a 12 year old from our school who is having private ulpan lessons while in Jerusalem. To see a high level of engagement as more ideas are being expressed is proof that concentrated learning in a casual environment is the way to go when brains are young and flexible.
