A Poem to Honor our Octogenarians and Nonagenarians by Nancy Coren

I  doubt that as we age we want to be called old, we much prefer the title
S enior citizen.

T o be honest no matter what you call an octogenarian or nonagenarian their mere existence
H onors those who are lucky enough to be in their presence
I t is not about the length of their days that makes them special,  it is the
S ense of wisdom that they bring to conversations.

T he years have provided them with enough time to reflect, to
H ope and to understand that
E very individual should be valued.

O f course it helps that they can still
L augh with us and at themselves otherwise life might seem
D ark and lonely.

P lease don’t dismiss their complaints because
E very ache and pain is real.  But as you listen to them also allow them time to
R each into their memories and share their
S tories with you.  You  will find something that
O nly a good story can teach and you will
N ot be disappointed by spending the extra time listening.

D o let them know how much we cherish them and how we know they will
A lways be connected to us in mind and spirit even when they are no longer with us physically.

Y ou too will want to be honored in this manner when you grow OLD.
