A Short Prayer Given At the State Capitol in honor of MLK's Message

Source of All Being,

As we gather today to remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. let us remember the words he shared about the ways in which we are interdependent with one another.

“We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all perish together as fools. We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. And whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be, until you are what you ought to be. This is the way G-d’s universe is made; this is the way it is structured.”

May this message not only resonate with us but lead us to action. May we actively pursue creating a society in which hope flourishes for individuals of all races, religions, genders, ethnicities, and economic levels.  May the fears that separate us be overcome, the apathy that fills our souls be shed, and the hatred that harms us be extinguished.  May we learn to combat prejudice and intolerance wherever they appear.

With these thoughts in mind, may we be blessed with open hearts that will put forth the light of goodness which is within all of us.  May we actually become this prayer as we continue to fight for the elimination of injustice and the planting of compassion and righteousness in our great land.

Amen
