The following message was sent to me by Marvin Friedman:
"2011 is the 60th anniversary of the creation of USY and many activities are planned across the country (see the United Synagogue web site). Since Tifereth Israel was one of the founding congregations, I thought it might be of interest to congregants. As a Lincoln high school student who was then president of the Tifereth Israel youth group, I attended what I recall as being the first organizing convention (with representatives from Lincoln, Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Sioux City, and KTansas City) in Kansas City in what must have been 1951 (since that was my graduation year, it could not have been later and might have actually been earlier). We had no idea we were starting something that would ultimately become an international organization. What we wanted was something co-ed (all there was at that time was AZA which was limited to boys) and synagogue based)."
If you have a USY memory perhaps you'd like to share it in response to this information. I never knew that our congregation's youth group was among one of the founding members of this amazing organization.
